Tesla Motors Inc. and Toyota Motor Corporation announced an agreement to develop an electric version of the RAV4, Toyota’s compact SUV. The plan to develop an electric RAV4 was first announced in May 2010 by Elon Musk of Tesla and Akio Toyoda of Toyota, with the aim to deliver the electric vehicle to market in the U.S. by 2012.

This week the two companies provided further information about the plan, confirming that prototype vehicles will combine the current RAV4 with a Tesla electric drivetrain. The plan calls for Tesla to deliver a fleet of prototypes to Toyota by the end of 2010. Reportedly the first prototype is already built and is currently being tested.
